Probably you are tempted to get a border collie knowing this breed’s working attitude. The border collie dog breed is prized for their intelligence and extraordinary ability when it comes to herding – be it sheep or cattle, poultry or pigs and ostriches. But before you finally adopt a border collie from rescue shelter, you need to determine first if rescuing a border collie suits you and your lifestyle.
A lot of people were under the impression that these dogs are easy to handle and train due to their reputation as the world’s best sheep herding dog. Unknown to them, training border collies is one of the most challenging tasks a border collie owner may encounter. Training them is just like teaching a genius kid who is fond of thinking. And when owners got tired and frustrated to what seems to be a hopeless cause, these poor creatures are turned over to shelter. Training border collies require commitment and preparation. Not only that. A lot of border collies are also turned in because they have bitten someone, be it adult or child. Others that have not displayed strong herding instincts also end up in rescue.
So why rescue a border collie and endure the problems he may cause? There are many reasons why dog adoption is recommended. First of all, not all dogs in rescue, regardless of breed, are problematic dogs. They may have been considered as problems by their previous owners probably because the breed is not suited for them, their lifestyle. Their previous owners may not have understood what it takes to have a border collie for a pet. In addition, most dogs in shelter are already housebroken or socialized either by their previous owners or by the shelter staff. Some have even completed their shots and were checked by vets.
Through dog adoption, you are also helping your community by freeing one space to accommodate other abandoned dogs. Most of these rescue shelters operate with little or no financial assistance from the government thus they can accommodate limited number of animals only.
The idea of adopting a dog is not bad at all. Just make sure that the border collie dog breed is right for you.
